Contact Lenses Q&A

It's important to understand that a comprehensive eye exam typically does not include a contact lens evaluation, and therefore you will not be given a contact lens prescription at the end of a routine eye exam. Envy Eye Care highly recommend you get your eye exam and your contact lens exam performed at the same practice.

In order to get the best fit and vision correction, the doctors at Envy Eye Care require anyone who wants to get contact lenses to undergo a special examination. This exam not only tests your vision but also measures your eye surface to determine the size and type of contact that’s best for you.

Additionally, the doctors may also do a tear film evaluation to make sure your eyes produce enough tears so you can comfortably wear contact lenses.

Soft contact lenses are comfortable and easier to adapt to than rigid gas permeable lenses. These soft contact lenses can help improve vision for people with myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia.

Daily Wear Lenses
Daily wear lenses must be removed every night for cleaning and disinfecting, then discarded after a specific amount of time such as after two week, a month or quarterly, depending on the contact lenses the doctor prescribed. One-day contact lenses must be removed and disposed of nightly before bed.

Extended Wear Lenses
Extended wear lenses can be worn up to 30 days continuously, even while you’re sleeping. These types of lenses can generally be worn for up to seven days before you need to take them out for cleaning and disinfecting.

Depending on your vision needs, the doctors at Envy Eye Care might consider specialized contact lenses.

Multifocal Contact Lenses
Multifocal lenses are special contact lenses that help improve vision for people with presbyopia, which is a vision issue that usually develops in your 40s and makes it harder for you to focus on objects that are nearby. Instead of getting a pair of reading glasses, you may prefer multifocal lenses, especially if you lead an active lifestyle that makes wearing glasses difficult.

Scleral Contact Lenses
Scleral lenses can help correct vision if you have an irregular or distorted cornea. These rigid gas-permeable lenses are larger than most lenses, extending to the white outer layer of the eyeball.

Orthokeratology Contact Lenses
Orthokeratology or Ortho-K lenses are special rigid gas-permeable lenses that are worn at night while you are sleeping to temporarily change the curve of your cornea. This creates clear vision while you're awake without wearing contact lenses during the daytime. They are taken out each morning for cleaning and disinfecting. Ortho-K lenses are a safer alternative to LASIK surgery.

Rigid Gas Permeable Contact Lenses
Rigid gas-permeable lenses are more durable and breathable, allowing more oxygen to the cornea than soft contact lenses. These contact lenses must be removed for cleaning and disinfection at night. These lenses provide clear, crisp vision for people with most vision problems. These contact lenses might be considered if you have tried soft contact lenses and have been unsatisfied with the results or if you have "dry eyes."

The doctors at Envy Eye Care know that contact lenses can be a difficult transition for some people. To help ease you into your contact lenses, your doctor first provides you with a diagnostic pair of lenses and either have you come back to the office in a week if you are having issues with the lenses or finalize your prescription over the phone if you do not have any issues. The doctors at Envy Eye Care will work closely with you to make sure you’re comfortable and your vision is clear before your prescription is finalized.

Wearing contact lenses can cause problems ranging from discomfort to severe infections if not properly cared for. If your vision becomes blurry or you experience eye pain or extreme sensitivity to light, see your doctor for prompt treatment. To help prevent problems:

Practice good hygiene
Before handling your contacts, wash your hands with soap and water, rinse and dry them with a lint-free towel.

Minimize contact with water and saliva
Don't put your lenses in your mouth to wet them or under any water. Always use proper contact lens solutions if needed. The doctors at Envy Eye Care can recommend a contact lens solution to use.

Take care with contact lens solutions
Use only commercially prepared, sterile products designed for the type of contact lenses you wear. Discard the solution in the contact lens case each time you disinfect and store your lenses. Gently rub and rinse your lenses as directed by your doctor. Don't use a contact solution that's past the expiration date.

Replace contact lenses and cases as recommended
Replace your contact lenses as recommended by your doctor. Clean and rinse your case with sterile contact lens solution after each use. Using tap water is not recommended. Consider flipping over the case to air dry. Replace your case every three months.

Avoid over-the-counter contact lenses
These lenses can cause eye injuries and infections. If you're interested in cosmetic contact lenses, please talk to your doctor.
